Is Yellow Dye 6 Banned? EU vs US Status, Risks & Where It Hides

TL;DR: Yellow Dye 6 is banned in the EU but allowed in the US (food additives).

What is Yellow Dye 6?

Yellow Dye 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF) is a synthetic orange-yellow azo dye derived from petroleum. It produces a bright orange-yellow color and is structurally similar to Yellow 5 but produces a more orange shade. Its chemical formula is C16H10N2Na2O7S2.

Why is Yellow Dye 6 used in food?

Yellow Dye 6 provides a stable orange-yellow color to beverages, confections, cereals, and medications. It is heat-stable, acid-stable, and inexpensive. Combined with other dyes it creates a range of orange and red tones, making it versatile for product formulation.

Is Yellow Dye 6 dangerous? Documented risks

Yellow Dye 6 was included in the 2007 Lancet study (McCann et al.), which found that a mixture of six dyes including Yellow 6 and sodium benzoate significantly increased hyperactivity in children. EFSA confirmed the effect warranted mandatory warning labels in the EU. EFSA's 2009 re-evaluation examined animal carcinogenicity data and found some studies showing adrenal tumors in male mice at high doses. EFSA set an ADI of 2.5 mg/kg body weight β€” lower than Yellow 5's ADI of 7.5 mg/kg, reflecting greater concern. The review noted limitations in the available data. Impurity concerns: commercial batches of Yellow 6 have been found to contain aromatic amine impurities including benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl β€” both IARC Group 1 human carcinogens. A 1992 CSPI analysis documented these impurities, citing them as reason for concern. A 2007 study in Toxicological Sciences found Yellow 6 altered zinc and iron biomarker levels in rat blood at high doses, raising mineral metabolism concerns. Human relevance at typical exposure is unclear. Hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, rhinitis, and contact dermatitis are documented. Cross-reactivity with aspirin is reported similarly to Yellow 5. In April 2025, the FDA announced plans to phase out Yellow 6 with other petroleum-based dyes.

How to avoid Yellow Dye 6: safer alternatives

Beta-carotene from carrots (E160a) provides yellow-orange tones. Annatto seed extract (E160b) provides yellow to orange shades. Paprika extract (E160c) provides orange-red. Turmeric (curcumin) provides deep yellow. Many European and natural US food brands have replaced Yellow 6 with beta-carotene or annatto. Annie's, Honest Tea, and various organic snack brands use these natural colorants.

Frequently asked questions about Yellow Dye 6

Is Yellow 6 banned in Europe?

Yellow 6 (E110) is not outright banned in the EU, but requires the hyperactivity warning label since 2010. Norway and Finland banned it historically. Most European manufacturers voluntarily reformulated to avoid the label.

What is Sunset Yellow FCF?

Sunset Yellow FCF is the international name for FD&C Yellow No. 6 (E110). It is a synthetic orange-yellow azo dye from petroleum. 'FCF' stands for Food, Cosmetics, and Fabric.

Does Yellow 6 cause cancer?

There is no definitive human carcinogenicity evidence. Some animal studies showed adrenal tumors in male mice at high doses. EFSA's 2009 review found insufficient evidence for genotoxicity at food use levels, but the lower ADI (2.5 mg/kg vs. Yellow 5's 7.5 mg/kg) reflects greater concern. Commercial batches contain carcinogenic impurity traces (benzidine, 4-aminobiphenyl).

What foods have Yellow 6?

Fanta Orange, various Doritos flavors, Cheetos, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Mountain Dew, Reese's Pieces, Nutter Butter, orange Jell-O, many OTC vitamins and medications.

Is Yellow 6 safe?

The FDA and EFSA have historically considered it safe at typical exposure levels with ADI limits. Concerns include hyperactivity, carcinogenic impurities, and potential mineral metabolism effects. The FDA's 2025 phase-out announcement reflects updated policy on all petroleum-based synthetic dyes.

Is Yellow 6 being phased out in the US?

Yes. The April 2025 FDA announcement includes Yellow 6 in the eight petroleum-based dyes to be phased out. No specific compliance date set as of mid-2025. California AB 2316 bans it from school meals starting 2028.

Can Yellow 6 cause allergic reactions?

Yes. Urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis, and contact dermatitis are documented. Cross-reactivity with aspirin is reported in aspirin-sensitive individuals.

How do I identify Yellow 6 on labels?

Look for 'Yellow 6,' 'FD&C Yellow No. 6,' 'Sunset Yellow FCF,' or 'E110' on food, medication, vitamin, and personal care product labels.
