Cool Whip ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: Kraft Heinz

About Cool Whip

Cool Whip is a non-dairy whipped topping produced by Kraft Heinz, sold at grocery chains and mass retailers across the US since 1966. It is the most widely used whipped topping in the US, marketed as a lighter alternative to real whipped cream. Cool Whip is technically a 'whipped topping' rather than whipped cream due to its non-dairy composition.

Common concerns with Cool Whip products

Cool Whip does not contain actual cream — it uses hydrogenated vegetable oil (a source of trans fats), high-fructose corn syrup, and sodium caseinate (a milk derivative used as a non-dairy protein) as primary components. It also contains artificial flavor, sorbitan monostearate (an emulsifier), and polysorbate 60 — a synthetic emulsifier that has raised concern in animal studies. Cool Whip is banned at Whole Foods for its artificial flavor and hydrogenated oil content.
