Hostess ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: The J.M. Smucker Company (acquired 2023)

About Hostess

Hostess is an iconic US snack cake brand producing Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, Donettes, and other cream-filled snack cakes, now owned by J.M. Smucker Company. Hostess is sold at grocery chains, convenience stores, and mass retailers across the US. It is one of the most recognized comfort snack brands in American food culture.

Common concerns with Hostess products

Hostess snack cakes — including Twinkies — contain TBHQ as a preservative, artificial flavors, modified food starch, and high sugar/HFCS content. Twinkies specifically contain sorbic acid (a preservative), calcium sulfate, and multiple processed additives to achieve their legendary shelf life. Some Hostess seasonal products contain artificial colors. The TBHQ preservative is banned from food in Japan and has been linked by EWG research to immune system disruption.
