Johnsonville ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: Johnsonville LLC

About Johnsonville

Johnsonville is the best-selling bratwurst brand in the US, produced by a Wisconsin-based family company. The brand covers brats, Italian sausages, breakfast sausages, and summer sausages, sold at grocery chains, mass retailers, and club stores across the US. Johnsonville is the dominant brand in the US sausage category.

Common concerns with Johnsonville products

Johnsonville sausages contain BHA as a preservative in many varieties — BHA is listed as a probable human carcinogen by California Prop 65 and the National Toxicology Program, and is classified as an endocrine disruptor by the EU. Independent food researchers and the Dailymotion food analysis series flagged BHA specifically in Johnsonville products. Some varieties also contain sodium nitrite. Tyson announced it was removing BHA/BHT from its brands in 2025, signaling industry direction, but Johnsonville has not made the same announcement.
