Kit Kat ingredients: what's banned overseas?
Parent company: The Hershey Company (US license from Nestlé)
About Kit Kat
Kit Kat is a chocolate wafer bar produced by Hershey in the US under license from Nestlé, sold at grocery chains, convenience stores, and mass retailers. It is one of the top-selling candy bars in the US and is known for its distinctive finger segments. The US and international formulas differ significantly in ingredients.
Common concerns with Kit Kat products
The US Kit Kat formula uses PGPR as a cocoa butter substitute and vanillin (an artificial vanilla flavor) rather than real vanilla. The US version also contains palm kernel oil. Notably, the UK/EU Kit Kat uses natural vanilla extract and does not include PGPR. The US-specific use of artificial flavorings and emulsifier substitutes is a meaningful ingredient difference between domestic and international versions of the same product.
