Lay's ingredients: what's banned overseas?
Parent company: PepsiCo / Frito-Lay
About Lay's
Lay's is the best-selling potato chip brand in the US, produced by Frito-Lay (a PepsiCo subsidiary) and sold at virtually every grocery store, convenience store, and mass retailer nationwide. The brand spans classic, kettle-cooked, wavy, and dozens of flavored varieties. Frito-Lay announced in October 2025 that Lay's would remove all artificial colors and artificial flavors from its chip lines, transitioning to natural alternatives.
Common concerns with Lay's products
Prior to the 2025 reformulation, flavored Lay's varieties (including BBQ, Ranch, Cheddar) contained artificial flavors, MSG, and in some cases artificial dyes. Classic Lay's contains a short ingredients list (potatoes, oil, salt) and is relatively clean. The 2025 reformulation commitment shifts to natural flavor sources for all varieties. Consumers should verify updated labels as reformulation rolls out across flavors.
