Reese's ingredients: what's banned overseas?
Parent company: The Hershey Company
About Reese's
Reese's is the best-selling candy brand in the US by revenue, produced by The Hershey Company. The lineup includes peanut butter cups, pieces, snack bars, and seasonal shapes. Reese's generates over $2 billion in annual US sales and is sold at virtually every grocery chain, convenience store, and mass retailer. Hershey announced in 2025 plans to eliminate artificial dyes from its candy brands.
Common concerns with Reese's products
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups contain PGPR in the chocolate coating and artificial flavors, along with high sugar content. Reese's Pieces have historically contained Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 — petroleum-derived dyes subject to phaseout under FDA guidance announced in April 2025. Hershey committed in 2025 to removing artificial dyes from Reese's Pieces and other affected products. PGPR as a cocoa butter substitute remains in chocolate-coated Reese's products.
