Rice Krispies ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: WK Kellogg Co.

About Rice Krispies

Rice Krispies is one of the most iconic American breakfast cereals, produced by Kellogg's since 1929. It consists of crisped rice and is sold as a simple, low-sugar cereal as well as a baking ingredient for Rice Krispies Treats. It is available at virtually every US grocery chain. Rice Krispies Treats products extend the brand into snack bar territory.

Common concerns with Rice Krispies products

Rice Krispies (the cereal) contains BHT added via packaging, with the compound migrating into the food. This has been confirmed by multiple independent ingredient researchers as of 2026. BHT is banned from food in Japan and is under active FDA reassessment. Rice Krispies Treats snack bars may additionally contain artificial flavors and HFCS in certain varieties. The base cereal is otherwise relatively clean.
