Special K ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: WK Kellogg Co.

About Special K

Special K is a line of breakfast cereals and snack products produced by WK Kellogg Co. and marketed primarily as a weight-management and nutrition-focused brand. The product line spans original flakes, protein varieties, red berries, and numerous flavored SKUs, sold at grocery chains, mass retailers, and club stores across the US.

Common concerns with Special K products

Special K cereals have contained BHT in packaging that migrates into the product, high added sugars in flavored varieties, and artificial flavors in some SKUs. The Red Berries variety has historically used Red 40 for coloring. Special K bars and snack products may contain TBHQ as a preservative in oil-containing versions. Many flavored varieties contain several processed sugar sources listed separately to lower individual ingredient rankings.
