Swedish Fish ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: Mondelez International

About Swedish Fish

Swedish Fish are soft, chewy fish-shaped candies produced by Mondelez International (formerly Cadbury), sold in the US since the 1960s. Originally imported from Sweden, the US-made version now differs significantly from the Swedish original. Swedish Fish are sold at grocery chains, mass retailers, and movie theaters across the US.

Common concerns with Swedish Fish products

US-made Swedish Fish contain Red 40 as the coloring for the classic red variety — a petroleum-derived dye requiring warning labels in the EU and UK. The ingredient list includes invert sugar, corn syrup, modified corn starch, and natural and artificial flavors. Notably, the original Swedish version uses carnauba wax and does not use Red 40, relying instead on natural colorings. The US and Swedish formulas are materially different.
