Twizzlers ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: The Hershey Company

About Twizzlers

Twizzlers is the best-selling licorice candy brand in the US, produced by The Hershey Company. Twizzlers are flavored candy chews made from corn syrup, enriched flour, and artificial strawberry or other fruit flavors. They are sold at grocery chains, convenience stores, and movie theaters across the US. Hershey has announced reformulation plans for Twizzlers through 2027.

Common concerns with Twizzlers products

Twizzlers contain Red 40 as the primary coloring agent for strawberry-flavored varieties — one of the most common petroleum-derived dyes in US candy. The ingredient list prominently features corn syrup as the first ingredient, with enriched flour (lacking fiber or whole grains), artificial strawberry flavor, and glycerin. Red 40 in Twizzlers requires a warning label on equivalent products sold in the EU and UK. Hershey committed in 2025 to transitioning to plant-based colors.
