What is Cyclomethicone?

Cyclomethicone is a term used for a mixture of cyclic silicones — primarily cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and cyclotetrasiloxane (D4). It is a lightweight, volatile silicone that evaporates from skin and hair after application.

What is Lanolin?

Lanolin is a waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals (sheep). It is extracted from raw wool during washing and consists of complex mixtures of esters, diesters, and hydroxy esters of fatty acids and alcohols. It is highly occlusive and closely mimics human sebum.

Documented risks

Cyclomethicone: Cyclomethicone itself has a good short-term safety profile at cosmetic use levels. However, the EU has restricted specific cyclic silicones D4 (cyclopentasiloxane — now banned from rinse-off in EU) and D5/D6 (≤0.1% in rinse-off products) due to persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential endocrine-disrupting effects in aquatic organisms. Human health risk at cosmetic concentrations is considered low, but regulatory caution is appropriate. D5 has been studied for potential endocrine disruption in animals; evidence for human endocrine effects at cosmetic doses is not established.

Lanolin: Lanolin is broadly safe for cosmetic use. It is FDA-approved as a skin protectant in OTC products. The primary concern is contact allergy: approximately 1–2% of the general population and up to 5–8% of eczema patients are sensitized to lanolin alcohols (the allergen fraction). Purified lanolin and lanolin alcohols in modern formulations have lower allergenicity than historical crude grades. Lanolin is not a carcinogen, hormone disruptor, or systemic toxin. It is not vegan.
