Is Padimate O banned?
Padimate O is permitted by the US FDA. Several countries restrict, warning-label, or have reviewed it for safety concerns. The US has more lenient additive rules than the EU, UK, Canada, and Japan, which is why this ingredient remains widely used here.
Why Padimate O is flagged
Padimate O is FDA-approved at up to 8%. It is a PABA derivative and carries a rare risk of photoallergic contact dermatitis in individuals sensitive to PABA-related compounds. There are some in vitro studies suggesting potential DNA damage from padimate O under UV exposure, though this has not been substantiated in human studies at cosmetic use levels. The CIR has assessed it as safe. Its use has largely been replaced by more modern, better-tolerated filters.
