Is Sodium Propionate banned?

Sodium Propionate is permitted by the US FDA. Several countries restrict, warning-label, or have reviewed it for safety concerns. The US has more lenient additive rules than the EU, UK, Canada, and Japan, which is why this ingredient remains widely used here.

Why Sodium Propionate is flagged

The health profile is essentially the same as calcium propionate. The 2019 Science Translational Medicine study implicating propionate in metabolic changes applies to all propionate salts. Behavioral sensitivity concerns that have been anecdotally reported with calcium propionate may similarly apply. At regulated use levels, sodium propionate is considered safe by global regulatory agencies.
