Is Zinc Oxide banned?

Zinc Oxide is permitted by the US FDA. Several countries restrict, warning-label, or have reviewed it for safety concerns. The US has more lenient additive rules than the EU, UK, Canada, and Japan, which is why this ingredient remains widely used here.

Why Zinc Oxide is flagged

Bulk zinc oxide used in traditional formulations has an excellent safety record. The primary concern is nanoparticle zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) used in transparent sunscreen formulations: the EU has reviewed nano-ZnO and found it safe for use in non-spray sunscreens (SCCS opinion 2022), but restricted it in spray products due to inhalation risk. Nano-ZnO does not penetrate intact skin. Zinc oxide is non-carcinogenic, non-hormone-disrupting, and reef-safer than chemical filters.
