Is Octisalate Safe During Pregnancy?

The facts: Octisalate is not banned worldwide, but some health agencies have flagged concerns. We can't tell you whether it's safe for your pregnancy — that's a conversation for your OB-GYN or midwife. What we can do is show you the regulatory facts and flag Octisalate on any product's label so you can decide with your provider. Commonly found in: Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 100, Coppertone Sport SPF 50, Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 70.

TL;DR: Octisalate is allowed in the EU and allowed in the US. Here's what to know if you're pregnant.

This is not medical advice. Always talk to your OB-GYN or midwife about your diet and products during pregnancy. A restriction in another country is not the same as a proven pregnancy risk — we show you the regulatory facts and the sources so you can have an informed conversation with your provider.

What is Octisalate?

Octisalate (INCI: Ethylhexyl Salicylate) is an oil-soluble UVB-absorbing chemical sunscreen active. It is primarily used as a UVB filter and photostabilizer for avobenzone.

Why is Octisalate used in personal-care products?

Provides UVB protection (295–315 nm) and helps stabilize avobenzone against photodegradation. Its light, emollient texture also improves sunscreen skin feel.

What regulators have flagged about Octisalate

Octisalate is FDA-approved at up to 5% and EU-permitted at up to 5%. It has a good safety record and low sensitization rate. The 2019 FDA absorption study detected systemic absorption above the 0.5 ng/mL threshold, warranting further study. This does not indicate known harm. It is a salicylate; those with aspirin sensitivity should note the structural relationship, though reactions are rare.

For educational use only. This page summarizes the regulatory status of Octisalate with citations to the primary sources below. It is not medical advice and is not pregnancy-specific medical guidance. Consult your OB-GYN or midwife for decisions about your pregnancy.
