Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol used in cosmetics both as a preservative (antimicrobial) and as a solvent and fragrance ingredient. As a preservative it is commonly used in combination with sodium dehydroacetate (forming the 'Geogard' system) in natural-certified products.

Used as a broad-spectrum preservative at 0.5โ€“1.5%, particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria. Also used as a fragrance carrier and solvent. In combination preservative systems, it reduces the need for more controversial preservatives.
