Hot Pockets ingredients: what's banned overseas?

Parent company: Nestlé USA

About Hot Pockets

Hot Pockets are microwave-ready filled sandwich pockets produced by Nestlé USA, sold at grocery chains and mass retailers across the US since 1983. The brand is one of the most recognized frozen convenience foods for teens and young adults. Hot Pockets offer dozens of filling varieties including pepperoni pizza, ham and cheese, and various premium flavors.

Common concerns with Hot Pockets products

Hot Pockets pepperoni and meat-filled varieties contain sodium nitrite as a curing agent in the meat filling — the same processed meat carcinogen concern as with other products containing cured meats. The product uses BHA as a preservative (listed as 'BHA added to preserve freshness' — the same packaging migration approach as in cereals). BHA is classified as a probable human carcinogen by California Prop 65 and is under FDA review. High sodium content (600–900mg per serving) is also a significant concern.
