Is Pectin banned?

Pectin is permitted by the US FDA. Several countries restrict, warning-label, or have reviewed it for safety concerns. The US has more lenient additive rules than the EU, UK, Canada, and Japan, which is why this ingredient remains widely used here.

Why Pectin is flagged

Generally recognized as safe with an excellent safety record. Pectin is a soluble dietary fiber with documented health benefits including cholesterol reduction and improved glycemic control. At very high doses, like most fermentable fibers, it can cause flatulence and bloating. No carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or reproductive toxicity has been identified. EFSA confirmed its safety with no ADI needed at typical food use levels.
